PEMF Bed

This month’s topic is about a tool called a PEMF bed (Pulsating Electromagnetic Field). We will discuss what it is, how it can be used, and how it can benefit your pup’s treatment and recovery.

PEMF is an acronym for “Pulsating Electromagnetic Field” The bed uses pulsing waves of electricity to accelerate normal biological cellular reactions. This treatment is FDA approved and has been used in human and veterinary medicine for over 40 years! One of the best things about lasers is that it passes through bandages, fur, skin, and bone. After just a 30 minute treatment, the only thing that pet parents notice is a positive change in their dog. They may even fall asleep during this treatment! Typically, results can be seen after 2 weeks in the way your dog runs, walks and sits/stands!

How does it work?

Cells contain electrically charged particles (ions), which dictate all cellular processes. Stressed by a number of factors (injuries, age, illnesses, or even environmental factors) the membrane that conducts the ions into and out of the cell is weakened and is not as efficient. PEMF bed frequencies penetrate the body, immediately impacting the ions and membrane. This increases circulation in the body, decreases swelling/inflammation, accelerates healing and targets pain. There are no side effects to this treatment!

What does it help?

Injuries and diagnoses such as, but not limited to arthritis, elbow or hip dysplasia, wounds, tendon/ligament tears, stiffness, joint conditions, neurologic conditions can all benefit from the use of a PEMF bed. It is a great tool, however it should be used in conjunction with manual therapy, soft tissue massage, and therapeutic exercise. As long as the treatment is indicated, each treatment session with Canine PT and Me includes allocated time to allow for PEMF bed. This tool can provide: increased performance, faster healing, pain relief, increased mobility and reduced inflammation.
