It doesn’t get very cold in the winter in Portland, OR so there isn’t any snow to worry about, but some dogs don’t like the rain. Most of the time, the great outdoors can be used for physical activity for our furry friends. However, it makes it more difficult if our dogs don’t like to go outside in the rain. So how do we keep their mind and body active during the long rainy winter season? Dog enrichment games!
What are dog enrichment games?
There are several ways that we can keep our dogs’ brains active due to limited physical activity. Brain games are a fun and easy way to help your dog stay engaged this winter. Similar to human crossword puzzles, word searches, etc., these brain teasers are great for our pups. For example, you can take a Kong and fill it with peanut butter, baby food, or yogurt. Then, place the Kong in the freezer so it will take longer for your dog to enjoy their treat. You can also put treats or chopped up vegetable pieces in the Kong as well. Pro tip: put foil on the bottom of the Kong prior to putting it in the freezer to prevent the contents from leaking out.
Another simple brain game for your dog is the Licki mat! Just smear whatever favorite dog spread across it and they have to lick it off. It will take them a while to lick all of it off, but this can keep them engaged for a bit of time. Some Licki mats even have suction cups on them so you could use it when your dog is getting a bath or getting groomed. Just stick it to the side of the shower or tub as you bathe them or trim their nails.
Finally, you can use or make a snuffle mat. These easy DIY snuffle mats are essentially layers of fabrics that you can hide treats in. Your dog will have to use their nose and paws to shuffle through the material to find their reward. These can be bought or hand-made for your dog’s entertainment. If you aren’t as crafty, there are several other puzzle toys out there that can keep your dog engaged throughout the rainy winter season.
If your dog is struggling to lose weight or you are keeping an eye on their caloric intake, you can use their dog food and hide it in their dog enrichment game. That way, it can act as a “slow feeder” around meal time.
Other activities to do indoors with your pup
The phrase “you can’t teach a dog new tricks” is a misconception. If you cannot use food as motivation for your dog, you can always teach them a new trick. Whether it’s a trick, a new command, or an obedience skill, your pup will enjoy the challenge. It will help keep them occupied as well as refresh their memory. Daily exercise can keep your furry friend healthy and help them to age gracefully into their senior years.
Another activity that your dog will love is a massage. Whether they are standing, sitting, or laying down, you can massage your dog in many different positions. Please contact your local canine rehab therapist to learn more about massage techniques and the many benefits of massage for your dog. Oftentimes after a massage, your dog will be relaxed and take a long nap. This is a great way for you and your dog to bond and to spend quality time together as well.
Give these brain games a try and figure out which are your dog’s favorites. Mix them up and keep it interesting so that way your dog’s mind is constantly engaged and wanting more. By adding these enrichment activities into your pup’s daily routine, it will keep them healthy and happy.
