In this post, we will be educating our readers about I.A.S.T.M (Instrument Soft Tissue Mobilization). What is it, what can it help and how it works will be our main focus.
What is it?
Instrument Soft Tissue Mobilization can best be described as a skilled intervention that includes the use of specialized tools to manipulate the skin, myofascia, muscles, and tendons by various direct compressive stroke techniques. I.A.S.T.M is said to have evolved from a Chinese method called Gua sha. Instruments effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. The design of these instruments provides our doctors with the ability to locate restrictions and allows them to treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure.
Uses
- Improves function and balance
- Improves fluid circulation
- Tissue healing and repair
- Improves muscle tone
- Increase in ROM
- Flexibility
- Improves nerve conduction
How does it work?
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a practical manual therapy treatment to help relieve pain from soft-tissue injuries. Physical therapists use specially designed tools to help remodel scar tissue, increase range of motion, promote tissue healing, and decrease pain.
IASTM was found to improve soft tissue function and ROM in acute or chronic injuries to soft tissues, while also reducing pain. Doing this treatment results in a breakdown of scar tissue and adhesions. This is a great treatment to add to a rehab routine as needed. Adhesions within the soft tissue can develop for many reasons. Surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms, are broken down during this treatment allowing full functional restoration to occur.
