Emergency Bag

October 1, 2026

If something happens in your life that is sudden, the last thing you need to worry about is if your pet has their basic needs. Not to mention the things you may not be able to remember at the moment! In this addition, we will go over what to have ready and how having this bag could save your pets life in an emergency. However, just as we are prepared for disaster, it’s important our pups are as well!

These essentials will help ensure you pet is just as prepared as you:

1.) Extra Food and Water (Unopened dog food generally has a shelf life of 1 year) Make sure these supplies are stored in something airtight, like a mason jar if possible. Don’t forget bowls! If you feed your pup food that is canned, remember to make sure to have a can opener if needed.

2.) Any meditations they would need, along with copies of their medical records, information on feeding schedules, medical conditions, behavior problems, and the name and number of your veterinarian in case they need to be boarded anywhere. Be sure these things are in a waterproof container.

3.) Extra Leashes and/or harnesses. Other helpful items like this would be a lead, or even a crate to ensure they cannot escape.

4.) A first aid kit – Sounds obvious, but pets get injured too! A kit for dogs will be very similar to the one you may already have, it’ll just have some add ons. For example: chlorhexidine. A common skin disinfectant, chlorhexidine is known to kill the types of bacteria and yeast that commonly lead to infections in dog wounds. Diluted betadine is also an excellent disinfectant to keep in your first-aid kit. DO NOT use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on your pup if injured.

5.) Beds and toys, if easily transportable. In stressful situations, having a couple of comfort items for your pup can go a long way – Just like you!

6.) Current photos of you with your pet(s) in case they get lost. Since many pets look alike, this will help to eliminate mistaken identity and confusion. Have these printed out and kept with this bag in case you are unable to access your phone.
