Here at Canine PT and Me we use a wide variety of modalities to ensure we can meet each pups’ individual needs. One of those tools would be using hot stones! Just like a spa day for your furry friend. This relaxing and calming treatment is one of many ways we bring long lasting relief to your dog.
Using hot stones during rehab is a common practice for humans and dogs! We use heated, smooth stones to improve circulation, relax muscles, and increase flexibility. Doing this can aid with overall recovery, discomfort from injury, reduce inflammation and more! The stones help muscles become more receptive to therapeutic pressure, allowing for increased range of motion and pain relief. Most of the time, the stones used are basalt, a volcanic rock that’s high in iron. The level of iron allows them to better absorb and hold heat.
There can be many benefits from using hot stones. A few are:
- Muscle relaxation
- Increased circulation
- Pain relief
- Increased range of motion
- Reduced inflammation
In a canine rehab setting, hot stones are best used under the direction of a canine professional who understands the anatomy of dogs and the importance of the proper temperature and placement of these heated stones. There are certain precautions that need to be considered before deciding if this treatment is appropriate (nerve damage, heart conditions etc). Proper technique is also a factor to consider. For these reasons, it’s best to consult your canine physical therapist.
Using hot stones is a great and natural way to relieve pain and stiffness, increase circulation and can give your pup a calming experience!
